Berthold Mai studied organ with a concentration in conduction, composition and the science of music at the University of Stuttgart Academy of Music (Staatlische Hochschule für Musik, Stuttgart). Since 1988 Berthold Mai has been lecturing at a school for music, theatre and dance in Sindelfingen, Germany. He teaches orchestra conducting, composing, organ and piano.
